The broad-band input coupler of Ka-band TE01 mode gyro-traveling wave tube(TWT),was designed,which transforms the TE01 mode in the rectangular waveguide to TE01 mode in the circular inner waveguide.The TE01 mode modulates the transverse velocity of the electron beams in the gyro-TWT.The design involved three stages.First,the input coupler was approximated,modeled,and calculated to get the preliminary results of interest,including its structures and sizes,etc.Second,the preliminary results were simulated and modified to improve the approximation,with the 3-dimensional,high frequency structure simulation(HFSS Code) software package.Finally,two types of the input coupler were designed and fabricated based on structure optimization.One was the optimal TE10-TE411-TE10 input coupler,meeting the design requirements of 3 dB bandwidth of about 3 GHz,and 1dB bandwidth of over 2 GHz;the other TE10-TE511-TE10 input coupler,3 dB bandwidth of about 3.5 GHz,and 1dB bandwidth of approximate 3 GHz.The results of the designed were found to agree fairly well with the cold test results.
